Students who were tutored by therapists using Basic Language Skills made statistically significant improvements in literacy skills. Their therapists were graduates of or enrolled in the Neuhaus Dyslexia Specialist Preparation Program.

 
BASIC LANGUAGE SKILLS

We know how difficult it can be to discover your child is struggling in school. Our goal is to offer guidance that will uncover a path to success. Basic Language Skills, a research-based curriculum for instruction in reading, writing, and spelling, utilizes multisensory teaching techniques that meet the needs of different learning styles and encourage the joy of learning.

Based on the pioneering research of Dr. Samuel Orton, a neuropsychiatrist, and on the educational and psychological insights of Anna Gillingham, a pioneer in education and psychology, the curriculum has been expanded and updated in accordance with new research findings.

Individualized Instruction
The following components are integrated into the Basic Language Skills program: Reading, Writing/Composition, Spelling and Grammar. Students typically meet three to four times a week for 50 minute sessions. The Orton-Gillingham method employed by Multisensory Teaching starts with the basic components of language and rebuilds the learning continuum step-by-step to ensure success. This method engages all three learning modalities: auditory, visual and kinesthetic/tactile.

There are students who are not struggling in all areas of language arts and may only need one component of the program, such as writing or reading readiness. Under these circumstances, students may need fewer tutoring sessions. Select programs listed in the Other Programs section are available individually to serve students with more specific needs of instruction.

Screening Process
Formal and informal assessments are utilized to determine students’ strengths and difficulties. Formal assessments are typically performed by a student's home school district at no cost to the parent. However, some parents prefer to seek private testing and some prefer informal assessments. Assessments are a positive tool to gauge a student's individual needs and every effort is made to make the process enjoyable. They also serve to give valuable information. Depending on a student's age, informal assessments take between 45 minutes and 2 hours.  At a separate time, a reading specialist will review the findings with the parent and set realistic goals and recommendations. Based on the outcome of the meeting, specific individualized instruction may be recommended.

Group Instruction
Placement in a particular group takes into account many factors and often is preceded by direct instruction for a time in order to adapt the content, curriculum and materials to a student’s skills and specific needs.

Whether individual or group instruction is recommended, Multisensory Teaching provides a nurturing environment with a teacher experienced in working with children who have multiple needs. Beyond enjoying and benefiting from the academic success that comes from the program, students build a strong rapport with the teacher and often come to greatly enjoy each session.

Alison Wurtz works to provide a nurturing environment that also incorporates elements of surprise and enjoyment. Through the method of discovery teaching, her students develop a positive regard for learning.
